Acquiring a Collector Automobile: The Private Path to Authenticity and Discretion

Published 4 August 2026

There's a real difference between ordering an automobile and commissioning one โ€” in process, in access, and in the guarantees involved. This guide covers what to verify before committing capital to a rare automobile or a bespoke configuration, and why the private route reduces risk compared with the open market.

Provenance: the first check, not the last

For a collector automobile, provenance matters as much as mechanical condition โ€” often more. A solid provenance file includes the complete chain of ownership, factory authenticity certificates where available (Ferrari Classiche, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity), matching original chassis and engine numbers, and documentation of any restoration or structural work. A car with incomplete provenance can be worth significantly less, regardless of how well it presents in photographs.

Bespoke orders from the manufacturer

The most exclusive personalization programs โ€” Ferrari's, Bentley Mulliner, Rolls-Royce Bespoke โ€” offer genuinely unique configurations, but access is never automatic. It typically requires a prior relationship with the manufacturer, a consistent purchase history, or an introduction through a channel with established credibility at the marque. This is where "ordering" and "commissioning" diverge in practice: the latter requires access, not just available capital.

Auction or private sale

Auction houses (RM Sotheby's, Bonhams, Gooding & Company among the principal names in the collector segment) offer price transparency and a competitive audience, but come with meaningful buyer's premiums and the pressure of the moment โ€” not ideal for a buyer who wants to negotiate calmly or stay anonymous. Private negotiation allows greater discretion and a more measured decision timeline, but requires direct access to qualified sellers and the ability to verify independently what an auction house certifies institutionally. Neither route is universally superior โ€” it depends on the piece and the buyer's objectives.

Importing into the US or EU

An automobile purchased outside your home market is subject to customs duty (typically around 2.5% for the US, higher for the EU depending on origin and vehicle type) and import VAT or sales tax, plus any homologation required for road use if the vehicle isn't already compliant with local standards. For pieces intended for display or track use only, different customs regimes apply and should be evaluated before the purchase, not after the vehicle arrives at port โ€” a sequencing mistake that gets expensive.

Valuation: more than a catalog number

The value of a rare automobile can't be read off a price list. It depends on provenance, the rarity of that specific configuration, condition relative to original specification, and market timing for that particular model โ€” which can move independently of the broader collector market. An independent valuation, not tied to the seller, remains the most reliable way to judge whether the asking price reflects the real market.

The role of a private intermediary

Orion supports clients through provenance verification, discreet negotiation, and, when requested, access to bespoke configuration channels at manufacturers. We operate on a success-fee basis: our compensation depends on the transaction closing successfully, not on the volume of deals suggested.
